Kenntnisprüfung (KP Exam)
The Medical Knowledge Exam for Approbation in Germany

Kenntnisprüfung Preparation
Master the Knowledge Exam

The KP tests your medical knowledge. With the right preparation strategy, Indian MBBS graduates can clear it confidently.

What is the Kenntnisprüfung (KP)?

The Kenntnisprüfung (KP) is a medical knowledge exam required by some German states when they determine that your medical training has significant differences from the German curriculum. After you submit your Approbation application, the state authority reviews your documents and issues a Defizitbescheid — a formal assessment of knowledge gaps.

If the Defizitbescheid identifies substantial deficits, you will be required to pass the KP before receiving your Approbation. This is different from the FSP, which tests only language skills — the KP tests your actual medical knowledge.

When is the KP Required?

Not every Indian doctor needs the KP. The requirement depends on your specific Defizitbescheid from the state authority. The assessment varies by state — some states are more likely to require the KP than others. In general, if your MBBS curriculum differs significantly from the German medical education standards, you will receive a Defizitbescheid mandating the KP.

KP Exam Format

Oral-Practical Examination

The KP is typically an oral and practical exam lasting 60-90 minutes. You are examined by a panel of German doctors (usually 2-3 examiners) on clinical scenarios from Internal Medicine, Surgery, and your chosen speciality area. You may also be tested on clinical examination techniques and diagnostic reasoning.

Subject Areas Covered

The exam covers the subjects identified in your Defizitbescheid. Common areas include Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Pharmacology, and Radiology. The focus is on practical clinical knowledge — differential diagnosis, treatment algorithms, and patient management — not just theoretical facts.

Defizitbescheid — What to Do When You Receive It

Receiving a Defizitbescheid is not a rejection — it is a normal part of the process for many Indian MBBS graduates. The document lists the specific knowledge areas where you need to demonstrate competence. Use it as your study guide: it tells you exactly what the examiners will test.
