Defizitbescheid: What It Means and How to Handle It

Understanding the deficit notice in your Approbation journey

What Is Defizitbescheid?

Defizitbescheid (deficit notice) is a formal decision issued by the German medical authority stating that your medical degree is not fully equivalent to the German Staatsexamen. This does NOT mean rejection — it simply means you need to pass the Kenntnisprüfung (KP) in addition to the FSP exam to obtain Approbation.

Why Do Most Indian Doctors Get Defizitbescheid?

Most Indian MBBS graduates receive a Defizitbescheid because the Indian medical curriculum differs from the German one in certain areas (clinical hours, specific rotations). This is normal and expected — do not be worried. With proper preparation, the KP exam is very manageable.

What Happens After Defizitbescheid?

  1. You are assigned specific subject deficiencies
  2. You register for the Kenntnisprüfung (KP)
  3. You prepare for and pass the KP exam
  4. Combined with your FSP pass, you receive Approbation

In the meantime, you can get a Berufserlaubnis and start working immediately.
