Spouse Visa for Indian Doctors in Germany: Family Reunion Explained

A doctor-led guide to bringing a spouse or child from India while you move through language, Approbation, Berufserlaubnis, employment or Facharzt training in Germany.

Author: Dr. Christin Varghese   |   Updated: August 2026   |   Focus: spouse visa Germany for doctors

Short answer: An Indian doctor in Germany can plan family reunion, but the result depends on the doctor’s exact residence title, income, housing, insurance, marriage and child documents, and the German mission’s current visa process. Being an MBBS doctor, having Approbation, or starting Facharzt training does not by itself create one automatic spouse visa. First identify the sponsor’s visa or residence permit, then choose the correct family-reunion category and document checklist.

1. Quick answer for Indian doctors

If you are an Indian MBBS doctor in Germany, your spouse or child may be able to join you through family reunion. The practical answer is not decided by the word “doctor” alone. It is decided by your legal stay in Germany: for example, whether you hold a language-course visa, recognition-related residence title, employment residence permit, EU Blue Card, permanent residence, or another title. Your professional stage also matters because the Approbation Germany route, Berufserlaubnis, FSP, KP and hospital job plan influence income, timing and document strategy.

The safest first step is to read your visa sticker or residence card, note the section of the Residence Act, and then check the current German Missions in India Consular Service Portal or mission page for the exact category. The family file should match your real situation: spouse joining a doctor already in Germany, spouse applying together with the doctor, child joining one or both parents, or family applying after the doctor’s employment has started.

Do not plan this only from WhatsApp examples. Two doctors can both be Indian MBBS graduates and still have different family-reunion outcomes because one has a Blue Card, another has a recognition route, another is still on language study, and another has only a short transition permit.

2. Why the residence title matters most

The legal foundation for family reunion to a foreign national is in the German Residence Act. §29 AufenthG lists the sponsor’s residence titles and general conditions, including a valid qualifying residence title and, in many situations, sufficient living space. §30 AufenthG deals with spouse reunification, while §32 AufenthG deals with minor unmarried children.

For doctors, this creates a common planning trap. A hospital may call you “doctor” in emails, but German immigration will still look at your residence title. A medical licence does not replace visa rules. A visa does not replace medical licensing. Keep both files separate and consistent.

Practical rule

Before your spouse books an appointment, write one sentence: “The sponsor in Germany holds residence title ___, valid until ___, for the purpose of ___.” If you cannot complete this sentence clearly, the family application is not ready.

3. Spouse and child routes compared

The word “dependent visa” is used casually in India, but German official pages use more precise categories such as family reunion, spouse joining a spouse, and children joining parents. The German Missions in India national-visa page currently lists family reunion categories in the Consular Service Portal, including spouse, child and parent routes. For an Indian doctor, spouse and child applications are related, but not identical.

Family member Core question Common evidence
Spouse Is there a valid marriage and a qualifying sponsor in Germany? Marriage certificate, sponsor passport and residence title, address proof, financial/housing evidence, A1 German certificate if applicable.
Minor child Is the child minor and unmarried, and who has custody? Birth certificate, passports, parents’ documents, sponsor residence title, consent or custody proof if one parent remains abroad.
Spouse and child together Can the family file show one clear household plan? Combined housing, insurance, income, school-age planning, civil-status documents and appointment category.

For spouses, the India mission page for joining a spouse says the Consular Service Portal asks questions and then gives a document list tailored to the applicant’s situation. This is important because the requirements can change depending on whether the reference person is German, an EU citizen, an EU Blue Card holder, a highly skilled worker, or a third-country citizen with another residence title.

4. When should your family apply?

Timing is not only emotional; it is legal and practical. The German Missions in India FAQ says that if a spouse is highly skilled and holds an EU Blue Card, ICT Card or is a scientist, the family member may be treated under the “dependent” framing when applying together with the sponsor or following within six months of relocation. The same FAQ says that if the sponsor has another residence permit or the family follows more than six months after arrival, the family-reunion category should be used. Always recheck the current wording before filing.

For Indian doctors, the cleanest timing is usually after the doctor has stable proof of purpose, housing and income. That may mean after a hospital contract, Approbation, Berufserlaubnis-linked work, or a clearer recognition plan. Some families apply together from India, but a weak sponsor file can create delays. Some doctors go first, complete Anmeldung, secure housing and employment, then apply for family reunion. This may feel slower, but it can make the file easier to explain.

Doctor-led insight

The right question is not “How fast can I bring my spouse?” It is “At which stage will my file clearly show residence purpose, income, housing, insurance and family documents?” A realistic three-month delay in planning can prevent a much longer delay after a weak submission.

5. India-side document checklist

Use the official German mission/CSP checklist as the final list. For planning, Indian doctors should prepare these categories early and keep scans readable, names consistent and civil-status proof complete.

  • Applicant identity: valid passport, photos and national-visa application material requested by the portal or mission.
  • Marriage proof: marriage registration certificate and, depending on the type of Indian marriage, supporting proof named by the mission page, such as religious certificate or ceremony evidence.
  • Sponsor proof: doctor’s passport, German visa or residence permit, employment contract or recognition-stage document where relevant, address registration, housing proof and insurance evidence.
  • Language proof: current recognised A1 German certificate when required. The India spouse page states that A1 is not always necessary, especially where high-skilled-work residence categories are involved, but the CSP decides the category-specific evidence.
  • Children’s documents: child passport, birth certificate, parents’ passports, sponsor residence title, and custody or consent evidence if only one parent moves or one parent remains in India.
  • Translations and civil-status consistency: check spelling, date format, name changes, prior divorce/death certificates and whether apostille, legalisation or document verification is requested.

Do not upload a document just because another doctor used it. Indian civil documents vary by state and marriage law. The joining-spouse page specifically separates Hindu Marriage Act, Sharia Law, Special Marriage Act and Christian Marriage Act proof. That means a Kerala Christian marriage file, a Karnataka Special Marriage Act file and a Muslim Nikahnama-based file may not look the same.

Pre-submission file audit

Before paying for travel or locking a school plan, compare every family document against three sources: the current CSP checklist, the German mission page for India, and the local Ausländerbehörde request if the sponsor is already in Germany. Mark each item as ready, needs translation, needs correction, expired, or case-specific. This simple audit prevents common refusals and appointment cancellations caused by missing originals, old certificates, inconsistent names, unverified custody documents or a sponsor file that does not match the chosen visa category.

6. Doctor-specific planning by career stage

Family planning should be part of your Germany roadmap, not an afterthought. The right visa timing changes as your doctor pathway changes.

Doctor stage Family-reunion planning point
Still in India, learning German Do not promise a family date yet. First clarify the doctor’s future residence route and document sequence.
In Germany on language or recognition preparation Check if the title, duration, housing and funds realistically support family reunion. Some cases need stronger income evidence first.
With Defizitbescheid, FSP/KP plan or Berufserlaubnis possibility Align the family plan with the recognition timeline and employer letter. Do not blur professional permission with residence permission.
With Approbation and employment The file is usually easier to explain because income, insurance and career purpose are clearer. Compare normal employment and EU Blue Card planning if eligible.
Facharzt training started Use the contract, payslips, residence title, housing and insurance proof to build a stable family file.

7. Common mistakes Indian doctors should avoid

  • Calling every case a dependent visa. The correct category may be dependent, family reunion, spouse joining spouse, child joining parent or another CSP subcategory.
  • Ignoring the six-month timing detail. The India FAQ distinguishes some high-skilled accompanying/following cases from later family-reunion cases. Check this before booking.
  • Assuming Approbation is enough. Approbation helps career stability, but the family visa still needs immigration evidence.
  • Submitting weak civil-status proof. Indian marriage and birth documents must match the current German mission expectations, especially when prior marriage, name change or one-parent custody issues exist.
  • Forgetting housing and insurance. Your spouse and child need a credible living and insurance plan after arrival, not just a flight ticket.
  • Planning emotionally but not legally. It is normal to want family close quickly. It is unsafe to choose an appointment category before confirming the sponsor’s title and documents.

FAQ: spouse visa Germany for doctors

Can an Indian doctor bring a spouse to Germany before Approbation?

Possibly, but it depends on the doctor’s residence title, duration of stay, funds, housing, insurance and the mission’s category rules. Approbation is a professional licence; family reunion is an immigration process. Do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

Does the spouse always need A1 German?

No. The India mission page says a German certificate is not always necessary and refers applicants to the Consular Service Portal for situation-specific rules. A1 is common in many spouse cases, but high-skilled-work categories may be treated differently. Verify the current category before booking or paying for an exam.

Can children apply with the spouse?

Often yes, but child applications need separate proof such as birth certificate, passport, custody and consent documents where relevant. If one parent remains in India or there is a prior marriage or custody order, plan this early.

Is an EU Blue Card better for family reunion?

It can make family planning smoother in some situations, but doctors usually need the correct medical licensing and employment conditions before a Blue Card strategy is realistic. Read the official category rules and compare them with your actual job and licence stage.

When should a doctor start preparing family documents?

Start while preparing the doctor’s own Germany file. Marriage certificate, birth certificate, passports, name consistency, translations, housing, insurance and sponsor documents take time. The application should be filed only after the correct category and checklist are clear.
