Nurse Visa Germany from India: Recognition, Employer Contract and Family Planning
INDIAN NURSES · VISA PLANNING
Your recognition stage comes first. Your employer documents and family plan should follow that stage.

Direct answer: The nurse visa route from India depends on your recognition status and intended work in Germany. If qualification measures remain, you need a recognition-related route that fits those measures. If you already have unconditional recognition, the employment route needs to fit your qualification and professional permission. An employer contract does not replace either check. Your spouse and children have their own family applications, and the requirements can change with your residence category.
This guide is for qualified Indian nurses comparing those routes before applying. It is not an Ausbildung or new nursing-degree admission guide. Start with your own recognition papers, rather than copying the visa category used by a friend. For the wider professional pathway, see our guide for Indian nurses moving to Germany.
In this guide
01. First, identify your recognition stage
Anerkennung means recognition of your professional qualification. Now, recognition and permission to use the nursing professional title are connected, but you should not treat every recognition-related letter as the final permission. Read what your authority has actually decided and what remains outstanding.
Put your case into one of three starting positions: you have a notice requiring further qualification measures; you are considering recognition alongside employment through a recognition partnership; or you have unconditional recognition and are preparing for recognised nursing employment. These are different starting positions, even if the same hospital is recruiting you.
The federal nursing law includes qualification, reliability, health and German-language conditions for professional permission. So a qualification assessment alone should not be read as evidence that every condition has been completed. Use the wording of your authority decision and permission document. Official source: §2 Pflegeberufegesetz.
Write a one-sentence status summary before discussing a visa: “I have received this decision, these measures remain, and this is the role my employer is offering.” If you cannot complete that sentence from your documents, ask the recognition authority and employer to clarify it first.
02. Compare the purpose, not just the visa name
| Your starting point | Route to examine | Main document connection |
|---|---|---|
| Authority identifies qualification measures | Recognition measure under §16d(1) | Decision plus a suitable course or practical measure |
| Recognition alongside an eligible employer arrangement | Recognition partnership under §16d(3) | Job offer, written agreement and qualifying employer |
| Unconditional recognition and professional requirements addressed | Qualified employment, including §18a where applicable | Recognised qualification, job offer and required professional permission |
This is a route-sorting table, not an eligibility approval. Section 16d has separate provisions for recognition measures and recognition partnerships. A partnership requires more than an employer saying that it will “help with recognition”. The law sets conditions for the qualification, agreement, employer, language and employment approval. Read the current §16d provisions for the route you are considering.
For qualified employment, §18a concerns skilled workers with vocational qualifications. §18 supplies general conditions, including required professional permission being granted or promised. Do not choose a category merely because your Indian certificate says “Bachelor”. The recognition outcome, intended occupation and mission's application guidance need to fit together.
03. Make the employer documents tell the same story
Your contract describes the employment relationship. Your recognition papers describe the professional stage. Your visa file needs to connect the two. Compare the employer name, workplace, role, start date and pay across the documents instead of checking each document separately.
For a practical recognition measure, the German Missions in India checklist asks for employer documents and a training plan explaining how the identified deficits will be addressed. For a recognition partnership, it asks for a written agreement connecting your recognition obligation with the employer's support. Check the current India recognition-visa checklist rather than using an old recruiter PDF.
Ask your employer these questions
- What is my role before recognition is completed?
- Who organises the qualification measure, and where is the written plan?
- Which working conditions apply during that stage?
- Who provides the employment declaration and supporting forms?
- What changes after professional permission is granted?
These are preparation questions, not promises that every employer offers the same support. Our nursing job-offer checklist helps you examine the offer itself. Keep that offer review separate from the authority's recognition decision.
04. Check language, finances and insurance for your route
Do not take the language minimum from a general immigration summary and assume it is the complete nursing requirement. The current German Missions in India recognition checklist specifically lists B2 for care professions. Professional nursing permission also has its own German-language condition. Check what evidence is required at your application stage and whether a language course forms part of the planned measure.
Alongside your language evidence, work out how you will support yourself during the recognition stage. The mission lists employment income, a blocked account and a formal sponsorship obligation as possible forms of financial evidence, with conditions. A contract does not automatically prove that the required amount is covered. Ask which evidence applies if your pay starts later or does not cover the requirement.
Insurance needs the same date check. Compare arrival, course start and employment start. Ask your insurer to confirm the period covered, including any gap before employment insurance begins. Use the mission's current requirements when arranging cover, not the assumption that any travel policy will do.
05. A visa and a nursing role are separate checks
Permission to enter Germany does not, by itself, give you unrestricted nursing responsibilities. You need to understand both your professional permission and the employment conditions on your residence document. Recognition measures, recognition partnerships and examination-only stays do not all carry identical work rights.
Under §4a Residence Act, the residence title must show whether work is permitted and whether restrictions apply. Before starting work, compare those conditions with your contract and actual duties. If an employer or role changes, check whether an immigration approval is needed before the change, rather than assuming your original permission covers it.
For example, a document mentioning an examination should not be read as general permission to take any nursing job. Ask the competent immigration authority about the exact wording, and ask your nursing authority about professional permission. One answer does not replace the other.
06. Plan spouse and child applications alongside your own
Start your family planning once your intended residence category is clear. A spouse application is not simply an extra name on your nursing application. The German Missions in India uses a family-application questionnaire to identify the applicable documents and circumstances.
Your residence category matters. §30 Residence Act contains an exemption from the pre-entry basic-German condition for spouses joining holders of specified titles, including §18a. Do not automatically apply that exemption to a nurse entering under §16d. Other exceptions can exist, so check the actual family circumstances rather than assuming that every spouse needs the same certificate.
Housing conditions also differ. §29 provides an exemption from the sufficient-housing requirement for spouses and minor children joining holders of specified titles, including §18a. That does not remove every other family-reunion condition or make accommodation unnecessary in practical life.
Use the mission's spouse application page to organise identity, marriage, residence-status and applicable language evidence. For children, use the separate minor-child application page. Birth details, custody and consent circumstances need their own attention.
Make two plans: moving together if the applications and practical arrangements allow it, and moving in stages if they do not align. Discuss accommodation, childcare, schooling and the recognition timetable before committing to travel. There is no universal family-arrival date that follows automatically from a nursing job offer.
07. Build a connected India-side file
Use this as an organising checklist, not a replacement for the official document list:
- Professional file: your qualification, registration, recognition decision and any professional-permission correspondence.
- Employer file: the offer, contract, employment declaration and recognition-support documents relevant to the chosen route.
- Course or measure file: enrolment, training plan and responsible provider details where required.
- Visa file: the current application instructions, language evidence, financial evidence and insurance confirmation.
- Family file: each person's identity and civil-status documents, plus applicable custody, consent and residence evidence.
Check names and dates across these files. For an Indian marriage or birth record, follow the mission's instructions for your actual civil-status circumstances. Do not assume that every document needs the same attestation or translation treatment. Keep a note of the instruction you followed and the date you checked it.
Then write down what is missing, who supplies it and the next action. “Employer to confirm the training plan” is more useful than “visa pending”. You can use our nursing recognition documents guide for the professional-file side.
A practical route-check exercise
Take a blank sheet and make three columns: recognition evidence, employer evidence and family evidence. The aim is to find a missing connection before you submit, not to predict the decision.
Starting with a deficit notice: Put the measures named in the notice in the first column. In the second column, identify the provider or employer plan addressing those measures. Now compare the dates and role. If the offer describes fully recognised nursing employment from the first day but your professional permission is still outstanding, ask for clarification. Do not solve the mismatch by choosing a different label on the visa form.
Starting with unconditional recognition: Put the recognition and professional-permission evidence together. Ask the employer which employment application documents it will provide. If your spouse is applying too, record the exact proposed residence category in the family column. That is the information needed to examine the relevant spouse-language and housing provisions, rather than the general statement “my partner is a nurse”.
Finally, add an owner and next action to every open point. Your employer can explain its offer and support plan; the recognition authority clarifies its decision; the mission or immigration authority addresses the residence application. Keep the written replies with your file. If two replies appear inconsistent, show both to the responsible authority instead of selecting the more convenient answer.
08. Common route mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the visa before reading the recognition decision. Start with the professional stage and intended activity.
- Using the recognition-partnership checklist for every nurse. A measure after a deficit notice and employment after unconditional recognition are different cases.
- Confusing an employment offer with professional permission. Check both documents and the role they permit.
- Copying a doctor's family advice. The residence category and family circumstances matter, not just the healthcare profession.
- Leaving family paperwork until flights are booked. Review those applications alongside your own plan.
09. How MedGermany helps
MedGermany can help you organise your nursing pathway around your qualification, German stage, recognition papers and employer offer. Bring those pieces together before discussing the next application. Recognition and immigration decisions remain with the competent authorities.
10. Frequently asked questions
Is there one Germany visa for every Indian nurse?
No. Qualification measures, a recognition partnership and employment after unconditional recognition have different starting conditions. Match the application to your actual professional stage.
Does a hospital contract let me work as a recognised nurse?
Not by itself. Your nursing professional permission and immigration work conditions must also fit the job. Ask what role applies while recognition is incomplete.
Can my spouse apply while I am planning my move?
The mission's spouse guidance covers a reference person who resides or intends to reside in Germany. Check the applicable category and documents together, without assuming simultaneous approvals or travel.
Does every nurse's spouse need A1 German?
No. Section 30 includes title-based exemptions, including for §18a holders, and other exceptions. Do not transfer a skilled-employment exemption automatically to a §16d case.
Should I use my recruiter's checklist?
It can help with organisation, but compare it with the current German Missions in India instructions and your recognition documents. Resolve differences before submitting the file.
